Overview
Walk St Cuthbert's Way with WAS & Make Tracks, celebrating the life of a 7th century monk, who took the message of Christianity from his Scottish base at Melrose to Holy Island. The route links Scotland to England, helping you to learn about the growth of Christianity in northern Britain, travelling from village to village by the same means as St Cuthbert - on foot. You can also just relax and enjoy beautiful countryside and quiet market towns in a part of Britain that is still largely untainted by mass tourism. The WAS itinerary includes a short diversion along the Borders Abbeys Way to Jedburgh, extending the official length of the trail from 62 to 66 miles.
The Route
STAGE 1: MELROSE TO ST BOSWELLS
DISTANCE: 7.5 MILES / 12.0 KM
Starting at 12th Century Melrose Abbey, the trail heads into the Eildon Hills before descending to a pleasant riverside and woodland stroll to St Boswells.
STAGE 2: ST BOSWELLS TO JEDBURGH
DISTANCE: 12 MILES / 19 KM
From St Boswells, the trail follows the grand River Tweed and winds through woodland paths to Harestanes. From Harestanes, our schedule continue on the trail, via the Borders Abbeys Way, into Jedburgh.
STAGE 3: JEDBURGH TO MOREBATTLE
DISTANCE: 9.5 MILES / 15 KM
The day starts by retracing your footsteps on the BAW back to the St Cuthbert’s Way trail. Whilst the end of the days walk is along a quiet country road into Morebattle, the trail traverses typical Borders hills and countryside, including riverside walks and sections of woodland.
STAGE 4: MOREBATTLE TO YETHOLM
DISTANCE: 6.5 MILES / 11 KM
A relatively strenuous day with a few hills climbs (including the highest point on the trail at 4oom), providing fantastic panoramic views across the Borders landscape. This section also follows the Pennine Way trail route.
STAGE 5: YETHOLM TO WOOLER
DISTANCE: 13.0 MILES / 21 KM
This stretch of the trail heads into the Cheviot Hills and provides your first views of Lindisfarne and the Northumberland Coastline and also crosses the Scottish/English border. This section also follows the Pennine Way trail route.
STAGE 6: WOOLER TO FENWICK
DISTANCE: 10 MILES/ 16 KM
From Wooler, the trail heads across Weetwood Moor. Historical features include prehistoric rock carvings, a 16th century bridge and St Cuthbert’s Cave. This is a relatively flat stage, although there are still excellent views of the surrounding hills.
STAGE 7: FENWICK TO HOLY ISLAND (LINDISFARNE)
DISTANCE: 6 MILES / 10 KM
The final stage takes you across the causeway from the mainland to the island of Lindisfarne (Holy Island). Hikers must be mindful of the sage crossing times as access to the island is determined by high and low tides. Safe crossing timetables can be found on the Northumberland Council website, or by clicking on this link SAFE CROSSING TIMETABLE
